Our Story

Autism Therapy & Training Inc. started with a vision and compassion of one person that wanted to make changes in the lives of young children. Chaza Attar started her career path teaching children. Her passion was to give children a second chance when everyone else had given up on them. Her pivotal moment began with a little boy at a daycare. Multiple teachers had quit on him and the staff had labelled him “too difficult”.

“When I walked into the room for the first time and couldn’t find him, they directed me to the rug in the corner. His favourite spot. This little guy didn’t join circle time, tantrumed if he didn’t get his way and diaper changes seemed almost impossible. He didn’t talk or communicate in any meaningful way” Chaza Attar.

It was compassion that drove Chaza to research more about children diagnosed with Autism since she was fresh out of university with no previous knowledge in ABA. She wanted to teach herself ways to engage him, play with him and include him in that social setting and improve his quality of life. The idea of a young child being isolated and alone was heartbreaking… and she knew there must be a way.

Chaza pursued her Masters in Disability Studies specializing in Applied Behavioural Analysis and for over 7 years provided home and in school therapy for learners she was supporting. After graduating from Brock University, she opened Autism Therapy & Training Inc. in 2010 and the centre began to flourish.

Our the years we have serviced many children diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and anxiety. We have proudly given children a voice and encouraged them to be the best they can be.

Philosophy & Mission

Education: A fun environment creates the motivation and curiosity to learn and thrive.

Excellence: At the heart of our practice is ABA; a well-developed science for educating.

Team work: Collaborating with parents and professionals to develop an effective education plan.

Creativity: Using innovative ideas to enrich teaching and learning environments

Helping Your Child Explore, Grow, & Learn

We create an environment to help our learners explore and learn. Natural environment teaching is a method of teaching that allows a learner to experience the world naturally and talk about it. All skills taught at the table are always generalized into the natural environment to ensure quality of learning.

Research

Alternative Communication Supports: Use tools like PECS or speech-generating devices if vocal speech is delayed; research shows these supports do not hinder speech development and can increase it (Bondy & Frost, 1994; Schlosser & Wendt, 2008).

Pairing and Motivation: Build rapport and pair the therapist with fun and preferred activities. Use motivating items to encourage vocal attempts (Greer & Ross, 2008).

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA): Use structured teaching with reinforcement (e.g., Discrete Trial Training or Natural Environment Teaching). Focus on mand training—teaching children to request their wants (Sundberg & Partington, 1998).

Consistency Across Environments: Practice in different settings and involve parents and teachers to generalize skills (Koegel et al., 1999).

Early Intervention: Start as early as possible—before age 5 yields the best outcomes (Dawson et al., 2010).
